Rachel Weisz is returning as Evelyn O’Connell in a new sequel to The Mummy, more than two decades after she first played the librarian-turned-action heroine.
The 56-year-old actress was photographed filming in London last week, with scenes being shot outside the British Museum. She wore a yellow polka-dot skirt, a cropped brown jacket and a matching wide-brimmed hat.
In keeping with Evelyn’s period style, Weisz carried a vintage leather briefcase and held an old-fashioned transistor radio to her face. The scenes are understood to feature her character travelling to work as a librarian and Egyptologist early in the as-yet-untitled film.
The production marks Weisz’s reunion with Brendan Fraser, who is also returning as adventurer and treasure hunter Rick O’Connell. The pair last appeared together in The Mummy Returns in 2001, the second film in the series.
Fraser has described reprising the role as “like being reconnected with an old friend”. The film is scheduled for release in October next year.
Weisz’s return comes as the popular franchise is revived for a new generation. She starred in the original 1999 film, which helped propel her to global fame.
When she made the first two films, Weisz had not yet become a mother. She gave birth to her son Henry in 2006 during her relationship with American film-maker Darren Aronofsky.
She later married Daniel Craig in a private ceremony, and the couple had a daughter, Grace, in 2018, when Weisz was 48 and Craig was 50.
