Samsung’s first Android XR glasses with a colour display could launch towards the end of 2027, according to a report that suggests the company is still weighing the technology and cost of the proposed device.
Samsung Display is understood to have been asked to develop ultra-small microdisplays for future smart glasses, with panels measuring around 0.2 inches or less. The Elec reported that both performance and price remain under consideration as the form factor is developed.
It has not yet been decided whether the glasses will use a monocular display, positioned over one eye, or a binocular system covering both eyes. Most of the early Android XR prototypes shown by Google and Samsung have used a single display.
A binocular design could support three-dimensional content, although it would potentially introduce additional technical and cost challenges. The choice is likely to affect the glasses’ appearance, weight and battery demands.
Samsung’s first Android XR glasses are expected to take a different approach. Rather than displaying images in front of the wearer, they are set to resemble Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, combining a camera with open-ear audio.
Samsung has previously shown designs developed with eyewear brands Warby Parker and Gentle Monster. However, the company has not confirmed when those display-free glasses will go on sale.
The reported 2027 timeframe therefore relates to a later generation featuring a colour display, rather than the first Samsung Android XR model. No final design, price or launch date has yet been announced.
