Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has called a snap general election for November 29 after his minority government suffered a parliamentary defeat over housing relief measures.
The vote, announced by Mr Sanchez on Monday, follows a series of political setbacks for the centre-left leader.
His government’s defeat in parliament on Friday was followed by mass protests over Spain’s housing crisis. More than 70,000 people took part in a demonstration in Madrid on Saturday, according to the Spanish government.
Public anger had intensified since late last month, when 87-year-old Marai del Carmen Abascal was evicted from her Madrid home after living there for 70 years.
The building had been bought by an international investment fund, which then increased the rent.
