Taylor Swift’s special award at the 2026 MTV VMAs was reportedly proposed by someone outside MTV, according to executive producer Bruce Gillmer.
Swift, 36, will receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors during the ceremony, becoming the most-awarded artist in VMA history with 31 wins.
The new honour recognises musicians whose work behind the camera has broadened the possibilities of music videos and advanced visual storytelling. It is intended to celebrate artists with an influential body of directorial work and a distinctive creative voice.
Swift has been nominated for the VMAs’ Best Director award seven times and has won the category on four occasions.
Speaking to AP Entertainment, Gillmer suggested that the concept did not originate within MTV. He said: “The Artist Director Honor really is an extension of the [Video] Vanguard [Award]. And in many ways, even larger in stature because it was an idea that, quite frankly, the kernel of the idea came from external. I’ll leave it at that.”
Gillmer did not identify who had first suggested the award. The comment has prompted speculation about whether the idea came from fans, music-industry figures or Swift’s team.
In a statement, MTV said Swift’s work had developed “interconnected narratives, cinematic worlds and recurring details” across her projects, adding that the honour recognised her wider body of work and the increasing role artists play in shaping the visual presentation of their music.
When the 2026 MTV VMAs will take place
The 2026 MTV VMAs will be held in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 27, and will air live on CBS from 7.30pm to 9.30pm Eastern Time. The ceremony will also be simulcast on MTV and streamed live for Paramount+ Premium subscribers in the United States.
Snoop Dogg will host the ceremony, while Madonna is due to open the show with her first VMA performance in 23 years.
