Todd Meadows’ final FaceTime call with his children has aired on Deadliest Catch, showing the 25-year-old reassuring his family that he was being safe before he died in Alaskan waters.
During the conversation, Meadows told his son that they would go fishing together when he returned home. His daughter then urged him to take care.
“I hope you’re being safe. If you’re not being safe, you better be safe,” she said.
Meadows replied: “Oh, I’m being safe.”
The season finale then showed the emergency that followed after he went overboard in the waters off Alaska.
Captain Rick Shelford turned the boat around after hearing screams and learning that a crew member had fallen into the sea. The crew recovered Meadows after he had spent more than six minutes in the Bering Sea, but he was unresponsive.
Members of the crew performed CPR while Captain Shelford contacted the Coast Guard.
Meadows’ death certificate lists his cause of death as drowning with probable hypothermia, along with submersion of the body in cold water.
In another behind-the-scenes clip broadcast in May, Meadows said that fishing in Alaska was “one of my dreams and goals.”
