Tottenham are reportedly considering a €130 million offer for Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez as Roberto De Zerbi seeks to address his side’s goalscoring problems.
Spurs sit bottom of the Premier League after a poor start to the campaign, despite making significant additions to their squad during the summer transfer window.
Álvarez has emerged as a potential statement signing, with reports claiming Tottenham could make a substantial approach to Atlético in an attempt to secure the Argentina international’s services.
Tottenham consider €130m Julián Álvarez offer
Tottenham strengthened across several areas over the summer, signing players including Sávio, Sandro Tonali, Omar Marmoush, Jan Paul van Hecke and Mateus Fernandes. Their investment, however, has not yet produced the desired results.
The club’s difficulties have been particularly apparent in attack. De Zerbi is reportedly seeking an elite focal point to provide the influence previously associated with Harry Kane and Heung-min Son.
Atlético chief executives Enrique Cerezo and Miguel Ángel Gil Marín would reportedly be offered €130 million for Álvarez, although there is no indication that an agreement has been reached.
The proposal could also include an unusual clause in Álvarez’s contract. Tottenham are said to be willing to allow for a future move to Barcelona if the Catalan club eventually makes an acceptable offer.
Such a provision would enable Spurs to pursue the striker while leaving open the possibility of a later switch to Barcelona. Any deal would nevertheless represent a significant financial commitment from Tottenham.
Arsenal linked with Atlético striker
Tottenham could face competition from Arsenal, who have also been linked with Álvarez as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his attacking options.
The striker’s previous experience in English football is viewed as an attraction, while his movement and versatility allow him to play as a centre-forward or in a deeper attacking role.
Álvarez’s future has been the subject of increased speculation following a turbulent summer at Atlético. He reportedly expressed a desire to seek a fresh challenge, prompting a transfer saga involving Barcelona.
Atlético resisted selling the forward to their La Liga rivals and pointed to his substantial release clause. Although relations between the clubs later improved, Álvarez remained in Madrid after the transfer window closed, leaving Tottenham to consider a possible approach.
