Manchester United face a major hurdle in their pursuit of Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey, with the Black Cats unwilling to consider his departure during the January transfer window.
Brobbey remains on United’s wishlist after the club’s efforts to strengthen their forward line did not go as planned. Although midfield remains a priority, the club are also seeking another number nine.
Manchester United interest in Brian Brobbey
The 24-year-old has impressed since moving to England from Ajax, scoring seven goals and providing an assist in 31 league appearances during his debut campaign.
His reputation has grown further this season after he scored a hat-trick against Manchester City in Sunderland’s final league match before the international break. He also enjoyed an impressive World Cup campaign, increasing interest in his services.
United are understood to view Brobbey as a potential replacement for Joshua Zirkzee, whose future at the club appears uncertain. The striker would also provide competition for Benjamin Sesko in the battle for a starting place.
Brobbey’s physical presence, link-up ability and finishing are all regarded as qualities United want in a new forward. However, Sunderland are adamant that they will not negotiate his departure in the middle of the season.
The Black Cats value their striker at around £50 million, meaning a move would be difficult even if they were prepared to discuss a January transfer.
