Albany and the wider Great Southern will host a packed programme of community, sporting and cultural events from Thursday September 10 to Wednesday September 16, with the St John WA Community Open Day, Albany Kayak Festival and Great Southern Football League grand final among the weekend highlights.
The week begins on Thursday with a nature collage workshop at the Museum of the Great Southern from 9.30am, followed by Demi Skye’s Woman is Vessel at Albany Town Hall at 10am. The Albany-Kinjarling Creative Writers Group will meet at Albany Public Library from 11am.
Albany events and sport on Saturday
Friday’s programme includes a Bushcare Busy Bee at Wagon Rock Reserve from 9am and the Healthy Women, Strong Communities session at Albany Public Library at 10.30am. Jonelle and Tony King will perform at the Earl of Spencer Historic Inn from 6pm, while Polly takes to the stage at Six Degrees at 8.30pm.
Saturday is the busiest day of the week, beginning with the St John WA Community Open Day at 76 Sanford Road from 10am.
The Albany Kayak Festival will also get under way at Albany Rowing Club from midday. The event runs across Saturday and Sunday, with a free come-and-try session and sprint races scheduled for the afternoon before a marathon on the Kalgan River on Sunday.
Sport will dominate the afternoon, with the netball preliminary final at Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre at 12.30pm, the women’s hockey preliminary final at Albany Hockey Turf at 2.15pm and the GSFL grand final at McLean Park at 2.30pm.
The men’s hockey preliminary final follows at Albany Hockey Turf at 4pm. In the evening, Let’s Talk with Your Loved Ones in Spirit will be held at Stirling Club from 7.30pm, before Dig the Dust performs at Six Degrees at 8.30pm.
Sunday’s listings include the Kingfisher Fair and Open Day at Great Southern Grammar from 11am.
Book Chat will be held at Albany Public Library at 10am on Monday, while Tuesday’s programme features a curatorial session, Yakkin about turtles with Atlanta, at the Museum of the Great Southern from 10.30am.
The Shantymen will perform at Six Degrees from 7.30pm on Tuesday. The week concludes on Wednesday with Tiny Lives, Borrowed Light at the Museum of the Great Southern from 10am.
