The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards saw Sally Field, Matthew Rhys and Jean Smart among the night’s major acting winners, with Rhys making Emmy history by taking two lead acting prizes.
Field won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her role in Remarkably Bright Creatures.
Rhys collected Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow’s Bay and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for The Beast in Me.
His double victory was one of the defining results of the ceremony, which also featured tributes to prominent figures who died over the past year, a cameo from Taylor Swift and an appearance by Meg Stalter on the red carpet painted gold.
Jean Smart sets Emmy record
Smart won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks, securing the award for the fifth consecutive year.
The achievement made her the first actor to win an acting Emmy for every season in which a show with four or more seasons was eligible. It also took her total to eight Emmys, tying the record held by Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman for the most wins by a performer.
The acting categories also included nominees such as Zendaya for Euphoria, Gary Oldman for Slow Horses, Noah Wyle for The Pitt, Quinta Brunson for Abbott Elementary and Ayo Edebiri for The Bear.
Other programmes represented across the drama, comedy and limited-series categories included The Diplomat, The Gilded Age, Pluribus, Only Murders in the Building, Shrinking, Beef and Love Story.
The ceremony also recognised reality, variety, documentary and short-form programmes, while the red carpet featured Zendaya, Selena Gomez and other leading television stars.
