Jennifer Aniston’s relationship with wellness coach Jim Curtis has given him a larger platform for promoting his spiritual beliefs, he has said, allowing his message to reach “many more” people.
The couple have been dating for more than a year, and Curtis, 50, recently appeared with Aniston, 57, at a live question-and-answer event to promote his new book.
Speaking about his increased public profile, Curtis said he regarded the attention as an opportunity to help people who might otherwise not encounter his work.
“Aren’t I blessed to be of interest?” he said. “And to have the opportunity that if there is a soul, person or mind that is interested in my work, that now I have the potential to bring it to them. And that is my mission.”
Curtis does not have qualifications in psychology, but said he had trained in a range of coaching methods, including hypnotherapy, hypnosis, neurolinguistic programming, mindfulness, meditation and executive coaching.
He describes these approaches as a “toolbox of things that I’ve used to help my own life”, which he now uses to support others. Most of his 1.1 million Instagram followers are women.
Jennifer Aniston and Jim Curtis’s meditation routine
Curtis divides his time between Aniston’s $21 million home in Los Angeles and his own apartment in New York. At the actress’s home, he said he gets up early, does sit-ups in bed, feeds her three dogs and brings her coffee.
The couple then meditate together, a routine Curtis said was designed to help them look inward and manage their emotions.
“We take real responsibility to go within and understand and soothe ourselves. So we meditate together,” he said. “I meditate and I’ll say things like ‘I’m divinely guided’, meaning I don’t have to worry, it’s all working out.”
Curtis said he avoids watching the news, describing it as “brainwashing”, and steers clear of reports about his relationship with Aniston.
His own methods have nevertheless attracted scrutiny. A TEDx talk he gave in 2018, titled The Cosmic Algorithm: Deciphering the Signs, was flagged by TED as appearing to fall outside its editorial guidelines.
His new book centres on his belief in the “quantum field”, which he describes as an energetic space where every possible version of a person’s life exists simultaneously. The term is borrowed from formal physics theory, which has been criticised by scientists as “fraudulent” when used to give such ideas a veneer of scientific authority.
Curtis insists that he regards spirituality and science as separate. Reflecting on his decision to offer spiritual guidance, he said: “For a long time I felt like, who am I to give spiritual advice? Who am I to give advice on how you’re going to overcome your pain and your suffering in your life? And then I realised who am I not to?”
Aniston made their relationship public on Instagram last November, when she shared a black-and-white photograph of herself embracing Curtis from behind to mark his birthday.
“Happy birthday, my love. Cherished ❤️,” she wrote.
Curtis also shared photographs from the celebration, writing in one post: “50 and feeling good! Birthday recap part 1. Thank you for all the wishes and love. So grateful for you my friends, family and community.”
In another post, which included a wider version of the photograph shared by Aniston, he added: “If this is a dream I don’t want to wake up. ❤️.”
People close to the couple have described their relationship as having developed into a settled partnership. They are said to be more trusting and less guarded, with an ease that comes from feeling accepted rather than needing to impress one another.
Aniston’s friends have reportedly been struck by how naturally their lives have blended despite coming from different worlds. They believe the relationship has benefited from Curtis being outside the entertainment industry and pursuing his own work.
