Australian motorists have been warned that higher fuel prices could persist as the conflict in the Middle East escalates and global oil prices rise above $US100 a barrel. The average price of regular unleaded in Australia has reached $2.11 a litre, up sharply from $1.55 in July. Diesel prices have risen by almost 50 per cent since the end of June. The increases have fuelled concerns about inflation and the prospect of the Reserve Bank of Australia raising its cash rate when its monetary policy board next meets at the end of September. Peter Khoury, a spokesman for the motoring…
Emma Barnett is set to leave BBC Radio 4’s Today programme after just over two years, with reports suggesting she will take on a new current affairs podcast for BBC Sounds. The corporation has not confirmed the move, but a spokesman did not deny the reports. Barnett joined the flagship news programme in May 2024 after presenting Woman’s Hour. Her departure would leave Justin Webb, Nick Robinson and Anna Foster as its only permanent presenters. A BBC source said there…

He said he and Microsoft’s chief marketing officer, Takeshi Numoto, had been discussing the departure for some time. “I remain optimistic about the company mission, the incredible talent on this team, and how much the company depends on us during this critical time,” Shaw wrote in…
Mark Wahlberg has described the “gut punch” of emotions he feels on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, after narrowly avoiding becoming a passenger on one of the hijacked planes. The actor had been booked to travel from Boston to Los Angeles on American Airlines Flight 11 on September 11, 2001, but changed his plans the previous day and flew to Toronto instead. Flight 11 was hijacked shortly after take-off and crashed into the North Tower of New York’s World Trade Centre at 8.46am, killing everyone on board and many people inside the building. Wahlberg has previously spoken…

Fremantle will now travel to Sydney for a last-four clash with the Swans, who earned a home preliminary final after defeating Brisbane in the qualifying finals. The match will be played at the SCG, with the winner progressing to the grand final. The Dockers entered…

The prospect of a fresh US interest-rate rise has moved sharply into view after August inflation accelerated more than expected, putting Federal Reserve chair Kevin Warsh under renewed pressure before next week’s policy meeting. Core consumer prices, which exclude food and energy, increased by 0.3% in August against forecasts for a 0.2% rise. The headline consumer price index advanced 0.4%, while petrol prices climbed 3.9%. Markets now put the likelihood of a quarter-point increase at roughly 85%, up from about 70% before the figures were released. The meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee is scheduled for 15 and 16…
