Beau Lamarre-Condon has returned to the witness box in the NSW Supreme Court in Sydney, where he is standing trial over the deaths of former television presenter Jesse Baird and Qantas flight attendant Luke Davies.
The former NSW police officer, 31, has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder. His defence is that he acted in self-defence.
Mr Baird, 26, and Mr Davies, 29, died from gunshot wounds in Paddington on February 19, 2024. Lamarre-Condon has not yet given evidence about the day of their deaths.
The Crown alleges he developed an obsessive and jealous infatuation with Mr Baird, which intensified after the former couple’s casual romantic relationship ended in November 2023.
The accused has also denied an aggravated charge alleging that he broke into Mr Baird’s home six months earlier, on August 17, 2023, and stole his mobile phone and wallet.
Giving evidence on Thursday, Lamarre-Condon said he entered the property using a key Mr Baird had left in the letterbox. He denied breaking in, but admitted putting a bobby pin in the front-door lock.
He said he wanted to take Mr Baird’s phone outside while he was sleeping to check whether he was in a relationship with another man. If Mr Baird woke up and came outside, Lamarre-Condon said, he “would see the bobby pin [and] not be under the impression that it was me going through his phone”.
The defence case is that Lamarre-Condon went to Mr Baird’s home disguised as an Uber Eats delivery rider to collect belongings. It alleges his police-issued Glock pistol fired twice during a struggle with Mr Baird, fatally wounding him, and that Mr Davies shot himself during a second struggle.
There is no dispute that Lamarre-Condon cleaned Mr Baird’s share house and disposed of the two men’s bodies. The 15-person jury is continuing to hear his evidence.
