Manchester United have reportedly contacted Didier Deschamps as the club considers managerial alternatives amid growing uncertainty over Michael Carrick’s position.
French outlet Foot Mercato claims United’s board have approached the former France manager in recent days to establish whether he would be interested in taking charge at Old Trafford.
The club’s hierarchy is understood to be assessing several high-profile candidates as it seeks to stabilise a difficult Premier League campaign. The report also names Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann and Aston Villa boss Unai Emery as figures United have approached, although Emery is reportedly close to extending his stay at Villa.
Deschamps, however, is said to be in no hurry to return to club management and not particularly keen on taking the United job given the current situation at the club.
Didier Deschamps offers extensive managerial experience
The 58-year-old left his role as France manager after 14 years in charge, having led the national side to World Cup success in 2018 and a runners-up finish in 2022.
His club career has included guiding Monaco to the Champions League final and Marseille to the Ligue 1 title. Deschamps also experienced English football as a Chelsea player during the 1999-2000 season.
His record of managing teams containing high-profile players is viewed as an attraction for United’s decision-makers, although the report suggests he believes the club’s problems may extend beyond a change in the dugout.
Michael Carrick’s Manchester United future remains unclear
The reported contact with Deschamps comes despite Carrick overseeing a dramatic 3-2 Champions League comeback against Roma.
That victory has not secured Carrick’s long-term future, with United sitting in the lower half of the Premier League table after a prolonged winless run. The executive board is reportedly preparing contingency plans should results fail to improve quickly.
