Manchester United are monitoring FC Twente defender Ruud Nijstad, but face competition from Barcelona and Bayern Munich for the highly rated 18-year-old.
Nijstad has attracted attention through his performances in the Netherlands, with a number of leading European clubs understood to be tracking his progress ahead of future transfer windows.
Manchester United interest in Ruud Nijstad
United are considering whether to make their interest formal as they assess potential defensive reinforcements. Nijstad is viewed as a long-term investment, although the Premier League club have yet to submit an official offer.
Barcelona are also weighing another move for the teenager after an €8 million proposal was rejected towards the end of the summer transfer window. The Catalan club could now return with an offer of about €25 million.
Twente are determined to keep Nijstad and are preparing an improved contract in an effort to strengthen their position. His current agreement runs until 2029.
Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, now Twente’s technical director, has confirmed that several prominent clubs have approached the Dutch club about the defender.
Bayern Munich are monitoring the situation as well, increasing the competition United would face if they decide to pursue Nijstad.
Twente believe the defender’s eventual transfer value could rise to €40 million if his development continues. Barcelona’s renewed interest and the Dutch club’s efforts to retain him could therefore make it difficult for Manchester United to secure his signature.
