Supporters of Xavier Becerra erupted in cheers at his election night gathering in West Sacramento after the Associated Press projected the Democrat had won California’s governor’s race.
Celebrations broke out at Drake’s: The Barn, where supporters chanted Mr Becerra’s name as the result was announced. His victory will see him succeed term-limited governor Gavin Newsom and take charge of the most populous state in the US.
Mr Becerra defeated Republican Steve Hilton, a former Fox News commentator and adviser to former British prime minister David Cameron. The Associated Press later reported that Mr Becerra had won the contest.
The result makes Mr Becerra the first Latino to be elected governor of California since the 19th century. He previously served as the state’s attorney general and as health secretary under President Joe Biden.
His administration will inherit a series of major challenges, including pressure over housing affordability, healthcare costs and the state’s long-term finances. Mr Becerra is also expected to remain a prominent Democratic voice in opposition to President Donald Trump’s policies.
