Manchester United are assessing a possible replacement for Lisandro Martinez as they prepare for a defensive rebuild that could begin in January or continue into next summer.
The Argentina international has faced scrutiny over his performances during a difficult start to the season. His public criticism of the club’s hierarchy has also raised further questions about his long-term future at Old Trafford.
Manchester United assess Lisandro Martinez replacement options
Former United chief scout Mick Brown believes the club have concerns over Martinez’s consistency and are already examining alternatives in the centre-back market.
“Everybody knows it’s happening, Man United want to improve their defence, because it hasn’t been good enough,” Brown said.
He added: “There is every chance Martinez could be replaced, if not in January then next summer, with a player who can bring a bit more consistency and command that back line.”
Brown said United were “doing their due diligence on a few different players” as they consider their options ahead of the next two transfer windows.
The club are understood to be planning reinforcements at both centre-back and left-back, with Michael Carrick open to additions in January. That leaves Martinez’s position under increased pressure as United review their defensive options.
Martinez started Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds but was substituted at half-time. Uncertainty over his contract adds another layer to the situation, although United hold an option to extend his deal and are therefore unlikely to allow him to leave for nothing.
The defender’s future is likely to depend on whether he can regain the consistency United require. If the club decide they need a more commanding and reliable presence in defence, Martinez could be among the first players affected by the rebuild.
