Drivers in Washington DC face a series of road closures and parking restrictions on Tuesday, October 27, as the city hosts the 39th annual 17th Street High Heel Race.
The pre-Halloween event will take place along 17th Street between R Street and Church Street, with the race due to begin at 9pm. The long-running tradition celebrates the District’s LGBTQ+ community and dates back to the 1980s.
Emergency no-parking restrictions will be in force from noon until 11pm on 17th Street between New Hampshire Avenue and O Street, as well as sections of R, Corcoran, Q, Church and P streets.
Vehicle closures will begin at 2pm and remain in place until 11pm on 17th Street between New Hampshire Avenue and O Street, Riggs Place between 16th and 17th streets, R Street, Corcoran Street, Q Street and Church Street.
P Street, between 16th and 18th streets, may also be closed intermittently during the same period for public safety reasons.
The Metropolitan Police Department said the timings and restrictions could change depending on conditions. It warned that increased pedestrian activity was likely to cause delays and urged motorists to consider alternative routes.
Vehicles left in areas covered by emergency no-parking signs may be ticketed and towed, police said.
Traffic updates will be issued through the DC Police traffic account on X.
