The principal of Dade County High School in Georgia has been arrested and charged with two counts of improper sexual contact by an employee, agent or foster parent.
Joseph “Brent” Cooper was taken into custody after a school resource officer received information about alleged misconduct, according to the Dade County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation remains active and developing. Authorities have not said when or where the alleged incidents took place, nor confirmed whether any pupils are involved.
Cooper has been placed on administrative leave, Dade County School District superintendent Josh Ingle told families in a letter issued after the district was notified of the investigation.
Two assistant principals will oversee the school’s day-to-day operations while Mr Ingle works with district leaders and the Board of Education on the next steps.
“Our focus remains on providing a safe, stable, and supportive learning environment for students and staff,” Mr Ingle wrote. “We take that responsibility seriously and remain committed to the safety, well-being, and education of every student we serve.”
The sheriff’s office is appealing for anyone with information, or anyone who believes they may have been a victim, to contact its criminal investigations division by emailing tips@dadesheriff.com or calling 706-657-3233.
Cooper has been accused but not convicted, and the investigation is continuing.
