Country singer Ella Langley has rejected a fan’s request for a date after he shouted the proposition to her through a fence following her concert in Knoxville, Tennessee.
The 27-year-old singer was standing with members of her band when TikTok influencer Tiki called out: “Ella, how many likes to take you on a date?”
Langley initially appeared startled before replying: “Not enough in the world.” She then looked away and shook her head.
Tiki responded with an audible sigh before turning to the camera and saying: “You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.” The line is a well-known quote attributed to hockey great Wayne Gretzky.
The exchange, posted on Tiki’s TikTok account, quickly prompted a divided response from viewers. Some criticised Langley’s reply, with one writing: “This rubbed me the wrong way. And I like her.”
Another asked: “Literally what is her problem?” while a third said she could have refused “in a whole different way”.
Others defended the country singer, arguing that she was entitled to reject a stranger who had shouted at her in public. One supporter wrote: “Being screamed at 24/7 would get irritating.”
Another added: “There’s no way yall are mad at her for reacting negatively to a kid screaming at her asking to take her on a date in front of her team??? Yall gotta go outside.”
Langley later addressed the criticism in the comments, explaining that her response was intended as dark humour.
“It was meant to come off as dark humor. You said that and it got quiet and I got nervous,” she wrote.
The singer is reportedly dating fellow country artist Tucker Wetmore, although neither has commented publicly on the status of their relationship. The pair have been seen together on several occasions in recent months, including leaving the Nashville Songwriter Awards through a side door on September 22.
Langley has become a breakout name in country music following the success of her song Choosin’ Texas, which topped the Billboard charts this year and surpassed Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas.
