Former NBA player J.R. Smith has been arrested in North Texas over an allegation of family violence assault causing bodily injury.
Smith, whose full name is Earl Joseph Smith III, was taken into custody by Royse City police on Monday, 28 September, after officers stopped a vehicle travelling eastbound on Interstate 30 in Hunt County.
Police said an automatic number-plate recognition system alerted an officer to the vehicle at about 2.45pm. The alert was linked to an active warrant issued by the Southlake Police Department.
The warrant relates to an allegation of assault against a family member resulting in bodily injury. Southlake police have not released details of the incident, and the allegation has not been tested in court.

J.R. Smith’s NBA career
The 41-year-old played 16 seasons in the NBA between 2004 and 2020, representing the New Orleans Hornets, Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers.
He won NBA championships with the Cavaliers in 2016 and the Lakers in 2020, playing alongside LeBron James on both occasions.
Smith was also named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year for the 2012-13 season while with the New York Knicks.
The circumstances surrounding the Southlake allegation have not been made public. An arrest is not a finding of guilt, and Smith would be entitled to a presumption of innocence unless proven guilty.
