Five men have been arrested near RAF Fairford on suspicion of preparing a terrorist attack after three suspicious vehicles were reported heading towards the airfield.
Gloucestershire Police responded in the early hours of Sunday, with the suspects later detained in the nearby village of Whelford.
Police activity in the area included a remote-controlled bomb disposal robot working near a number of white vans. A local resident was evacuated after a neighbour raised concerns about the vehicles.
Nearly 85 homes were evacuated as a precaution, Deputy Assistant Police Commissioner Vicki Evans said.
The arrests come as security at RAF Fairford has been increased in recent days. The airfield is home to US Air Force heavy bombers making runs to Iran.
A US Air Force spokesperson said American personnel at RAF Fairford would “remain vigilant” following the arrests.
