North Georgia is heading back into summer-like conditions, with Atlanta forecast to reach 91F on Wednesday, September 9, before temperatures climb further and rain chances increase later in the week.
The brief spell of more comfortable weather early on Wednesday, when temperatures were mostly in the 60s and humidity was lower, is expected to give way to a prolonged stretch of heat across the region.
Atlanta’s forecast high is around five degrees above the seasonal average. The National Weather Service expects temperatures to rise to about 93F on Thursday and Friday, with the heat index potentially reaching 97F on Thursday.
Atlanta weather set to turn hotter and wetter
Most of North Georgia should remain dry and mostly sunny on Wednesday as high pressure dominates the area. A few showers may develop farther south, including near Macon, but widespread rain is not expected around metro Atlanta.
The pattern is due to change from Thursday, when an approaching front is expected to stall over the region. That will bring isolated afternoon and evening showers or thunderstorms, although many communities could remain dry.
Rain is expected to become more likely on Friday, particularly around metro Atlanta and south of Interstate 20. The National Weather Service puts the chance of showers and thunderstorms at about 60 per cent near Atlanta International Airport.
By Saturday, showers and thunderstorms are forecast to become more widespread across North Georgia, with the greatest chance of unsettled weather during the afternoon. The weekend is not expected to be a complete washout, but conditions could be disruptive for outdoor plans.
Further showers and storms are possible on Sunday, while temperatures are likely to remain around 90F or higher into the start of next week. The return of cooler mornings has therefore proved short-lived, with the region set for more heat before any lasting change towards autumn.
