Kai Havertz made Premier League history at Anfield as his early goal gave Arsenal a 1-0 win over Liverpool and made him the competition’s highest-scoring German player.
The 27-year-old struck after 16 minutes, converting Declan Rice’s delivery at the back post to secure Arsenal’s first league victory at Anfield since September 2012.
The goal took Havertz’s Premier League total to 46, moving him beyond former Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan’s previous German record of 45.
Kai Havertz sets new German goalscoring record
Havertz scored 19 of his goals during his time at Chelsea, while 27 have come since his move to Arsenal. Sunday’s winner was also his third Premier League goal of the current season.
Arsenal capitalised on a costly error in Alisson Becker’s distribution before Rice supplied the pass for Havertz to finish the move.
The result sent Mikel Arteta’s side back to the top of the Premier League, three points clear of Manchester City, while ending their long wait for a win at Liverpool’s home ground.
Havertz’s role at Arsenal has often been debated, with the German spending significant periods in midfield rather than operating as a conventional striker. However, his latest milestone underlined his growing statistical contribution.
Arteta also selected Havertz ahead of Viktor Gyokeres for one of Arsenal’s biggest away matches of the season, and the forward repaid that decision by scoring the decisive goal.
Having moved above Gundogan’s record at Anfield, Havertz now has the opportunity to extend his lead as the Premier League’s leading German goalscorer.
