The driver involved in a Kansas youth soccer crash that killed two people and injured 10 others has been released from custody without being charged.
Wichita police said the 34-year-old woman was released after investigators interviewed more than 30 witnesses and consulted prosecutors. The investigation remains ongoing.
Officers are awaiting toxicology results and a mechanical examination of the Chevrolet pickup as they try to establish what caused the crash at the Stryker Sports Complex on Saturday.
The two people who died were named as six-year-old Adrian Cole and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer, 35, both of McPherson, Kansas. Police said they were not related and died at the scene.
Those injured included five children: two five-year-olds, two eight-year-old boys and a nine-year-old girl. Five adults, aged between 28 and 68, were also hurt, although none of the injuries was considered critical.
A 61-year-old woman was taken to hospital after experiencing medical complications unrelated to injuries sustained in the crash.
Police said the woman had been parked near the football pitches when her pickup suddenly drove on to the grass, hitting children and adults. Two of her children were inside the vehicle, while another was playing football on a different pitch at the complex.
Investigators interviewed the driver after speaking to witnesses, including the two children who had been in the pickup.
All events at the sports complex have been cancelled until further notice. Kansas Youth Soccer described the incident as devastating, while Wichita officials have asked anyone with photographs or video of the crash to provide them to investigators.
Wichita police chief Joe Sullivan described the incident as “an unimaginable loss”, saying an afternoon intended for children to play football and families to spend time together had ended in heartbreak.
No charges have been filed, and police are continuing to investigate what went wrong.
