Agnes Ngetich broke the women-only half-marathon world record by one second as she won the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen.
The Kenyan completed the race in 1hr 5min 15sec, having moved to the front from the start on a sunny morning in the Danish capital. She maintained her lead to the finish and came home 50 seconds ahead of compatriot Veronica Loleo.
The previous women-only record was held by Peres Jepchirchir, who set the mark while winning the World Half Marathon title in Poland in 2020.
Ngetich, who also broke the women-only 10km world record last year, is the latest major champion in a successful year. The 25-year-old has also won the team half-marathon event in Copenhagen and the World Cross Country Championships in Florida in January.
The overall women’s half-marathon world record remains with Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey, who ran 1:02:52 at the mixed-gender Valencia Half Marathon in Spain in 2021.
