Liverpool’s pursuit of Mexican teenager Gilberto Mora could be complicated by the midfielder’s reported preference for a move to Spain, with Real Madrid and Barcelona understood to be among his favoured destinations.
The 17-year-old has become one of the most highly regarded young attacking midfielders in world football after breaking through at Club Tijuana and making an impression for Mexico.
Liverpool have monitored Mora for some time and remain interested in taking him to the Premier League. However, his apparent preference for La Liga could hand the Spanish giants an advantage if they decide to pursue the player.
Liverpool face competition for Gilberto Mora
Football Insider reports that Mora would prefer to continue his development in Spain. That would represent a significant obstacle for Liverpool as they compete with two of Europe’s most prominent clubs for his signature.
Mora’s reputation grew further after his performances at the 2026 World Cup, while his form for Tijuana this season has continued to attract attention.
He has scored five goals and supplied one assist in seven Liga MX appearances, figures which have contributed to a sharp rise in his valuation.
Tijuana want at least £40m for teenager
Tijuana are reportedly seeking a fee of at least £40 million for Mora and are expected to consider selling the youngster next summer.
Liverpool’s interest is unlikely to fade, particularly given the club’s focus on recruiting elite young talent. Reports also suggest that the Premier League side have already made contact with Mora’s representatives.
They may nevertheless need to act quickly to remain in contention, with Real Madrid and Barcelona able to offer the teenager his preferred route into European football. For now, uncertainty surrounds Mora’s next move, but his reported desire to play in Spain could prove decisive.
