Liverpool’s interest in Aurelien Tchouameni remains despite the Real Madrid midfielder signing a new long-term contract with the Spanish club.
Tchouameni appeared likely to leave during Real Madrid’s summer reshuffle, but talks with new head coach Jose Mourinho persuaded the France international to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Liverpool continue to monitor Tchouameni’s situation
However, reports indicate that Liverpool have maintained contact with the player’s representatives and are continuing to monitor how his position develops in Madrid.
The midfielder faces competition for a place in Real Madrid’s midfield and is not expected to accept a role as merely a squad player. “Tchouameni would not be prepared to accept a role as merely a squad player at the Santiago Bernabeu,” Graeme Bailey writes.
Liverpool are not currently pushing to complete a deal, with Tchouameni still tied to Real Madrid by his new contract. His future could nevertheless become uncertain if he falls out of favour or Mourinho fails to deliver the role that persuaded him to remain.
Equally, if Real Madrid’s plans progress and Tchouameni establishes himself as a key player, Liverpool may find it difficult to convince him to move to Anfield. For now, the club is waiting to see how the situation unfolds over the course of the season.
