A row over cheering at a girls’ youth softball game in Sugar Land, Texas, escalated into a violent confrontation that left one man with serious head injuries and led to the arrest of a married couple.
Kiarious Hall and his wife, Jazmine Hall, were detained after the incident at Imperial Park on Saturday, October 24. Hall faces two counts of assault causing bodily injury, while his wife faces one count. Both were booked into Fort Bend County Jail.
The game involved 12-and-under players. Police were called to the park at about 7.30pm after reports of an assault near one of the fields. Man remains in hospital after water-bottle attack
According to charging documents, footage recorded by a bystander showed three men arguing before Hall struck one of them in the face with a metal water bottle.
The man fell to the ground and lost consciousness. Investigators said the video angle did not make clear whether Hall had been touched before the blow was delivered.
The footage allegedly showed Hall swinging the bottle again before becoming involved in a physical struggle with another man, identified as Gary Greaser. Jazmine Hall was then seen entering the confrontation and throwing punches, according to the documents.
Bystanders eventually separated those involved. The man struck by the bottle was taken to hospital with a head injury, while Greaser suffered cuts to his forehead, chin, arms and knees.
Steve Shellist, who represents the hospitalised man, said his client has suffered a fractured skull, a fractured cheekbone, three brain bleeds and a blood clot. He remains in hospital, according to the attorney.
Shellist said he expected the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office to consider upgrading the current charges to a felony, arguing that a metal bottle was used in a way capable of causing serious injury or death.
Couple disputes account of confrontation
Hall told officers that he had been cheering for his daughter’s team when another spectator challenged him, saying he should not cheer immediately before players pitched the ball.
He said the disagreement continued after a second man approached. Hall alleged that he was elbowed and poked in the chest before he acted in self-defence.
Police said the witness video showed Hall throwing the first blow. Shellist has disputed that account on behalf of his client, saying the injured man had not touched Hall and had approached in an attempt to calm the situation.
The affidavit states that witnesses appeared to favour people they knew from the competing teams, making the video evidence and physical injuries important to the investigation. Court records show Hall’s bond was set at 11,000 US dollars, while Jazmine Hall’s was set at 3,000 dollars. Hall’s first court appearance is scheduled for November 4, according to the Houston Chronicle. School administrator resigns after arrest
Jazmine Hall was an assistant principal at Lamar Junior High School at the time of the altercation. Lamar Consolidated Independent School District said she reported the incident to its human resources department and resigned with effect from Monday, October 26.
The district said the incident took place away from school and was not connected to a Lamar CISD-sponsored event or activity. It said it held employees, particularly those in leadership roles, to high standards of professional conduct. The Timbergrove Sports Association said both injured spectators were members of its programme, while the arrested couple was not affiliated with the organisation.
In a statement, the association said its immediate concern was for the victims, their families and the young players, coaches and parents who witnessed the incident. It added that there was “absolutely no place for violence in youth sports”.
The criminal case remains under investigation.
