A 58-year-old man has been hospitalised with serious injuries after an alleged road rage attack in Melbourne, during which he was punched and struck with a knife.
The man from Maribyrnong was driving along Pascoe Vale Road near Glenroy Road in Glenroy at about 7.15pm on Saturday when his car was allegedly sideswiped by a moped, police said.
The rider, a pillion passenger and two people travelling on a second moped stopped and approached the driver and his passenger. After a brief verbal exchange, one of the riders allegedly threatened the man with a knife.
Police said the driver was then punched in the head and struck with the knife, suffering a significant hand injury that requires surgery. Paramedics treated him at the scene before he was taken to hospital.
The two mopeds fled and were last seen travelling south on Pascoe Vale Road.
Detectives are appealing for witnesses, particularly motorists who were in the area at the time. Police are also seeking dashcam footage that may have captured the alleged attack or the exchange beforehand.
Police said the incident was believed to be an isolated event and was not linked to any other incidents reported on Saturday night.
