Manchester United have been handed encouragement in their reported pursuit of Freiburg striker Igor Matanovic, with the 23-year-old said to be keen on a potential move to Old Trafford.
A January transfer is not currently expected, but Matanovic would reportedly “jump” at the opportunity to join United in the coming years. Arsenal and Chelsea are also understood to be monitoring the Croatia international after his impressive form in the Bundesliga.
Manchester United track Freiburg striker Igor Matanovic
United are expected to consider further attacking reinforcements over the next 12 months, and Matanovic has emerged as a possible long-term option. He has made a strong start to the season, recording nine goals and assists across his first seven matches.
The Freiburg forward also scored 15 goals last term, helping to raise his profile among leading Premier League clubs. His physical presence, finishing ability and continued development are understood to have contributed to the interest in him.
United face competition from Arsenal and Chelsea, although Matanovic’s apparent desire to play in England could strengthen the Old Trafford club’s position if they decide to pursue a deal.
A move next summer could become more realistic if he maintains his current level of performance. His displays in Germany have suggested he can be an effective goalscorer, while his efficiency in front of goal indicates there may be scope for further improvement.
For now, no immediate transfer is expected, but Matanovic’s form and reported willingness to join Manchester United mean his situation is likely to remain under consideration.
