Manchester United are preparing to open contract talks with Luke Shaw, with the club reportedly keen to retain the experienced defender despite continuing efforts to improve their options at left-back.
Shaw’s current agreement expires in June 2027, meaning United are expected to address his future before the situation moves into the final months of his deal. The England international joined from Southampton in 2014 and has made more than 250 appearances for the club.

Football Insider reports that discussions are likely to begin at the start of 2027. United are said to believe Shaw can continue contributing over the longer term, while his own requirements will also be considered during negotiations.
The proposed talks come alongside a search for greater competition in the position. United considered a number of left-backs during the summer transfer window but did not complete a signing.
Alejandro Balde, Jorge Salinas and Lewis Hall were among the players linked with a move, according to Opta Analyst. Hall was reportedly a particularly serious target, although Newcastle’s valuation was understood to be about £70 million.
United’s interest in keeping Shaw reflects his importance to the squad. He started all 38 Premier League matches last season as the club finished third and qualified for the Champions League under Michael Carrick.
Shaw deal would not end United’s search for a left-back
Retaining Shaw and recruiting another player for the position are not necessarily conflicting plans. His experience would provide support in a squad that includes several younger defenders, but relying solely on a 31-year-old specialist could leave United short of cover.
Patrick Dorgu remains an option, although his ability to play further forward gives Carrick flexibility. United may therefore prefer to add another left-back rather than make Dorgu their only alternative in the role.
The structure and length of any new agreement will be central to the negotiations. A shorter extension could keep Shaw at Old Trafford while allowing United to develop a younger long-term option.
