Doors Open Milwaukee has returned for its annual weekend of citywide tours, giving visitors access to more than 150 historic landmarks, cultural spaces and neighbourhood locations.
Most of the participating venues are free to enter, while a selection of specialist tours require tickets costing up to $10. The event continues through Sunday, with visitors able to explore sites that are not ordinarily open to the public or offer limited access.
Among those taking part is Beth Schueth, who said she and her companions planned their route in advance before setting out on foot.
“We put together a plan of things we want to see, and kind of figured out a walking tour that we can do,” she said.
Schueth described the experience as similar to a school field trip, saying it was “really invigorating” to pass buildings displaying the Doors Open sign and feel welcomed inside.
The event showcases Milwaukee’s architecture, history and neighbourhoods through behind-the-scenes visits across the city. A full list of participating locations is published each year in the first week of September to help visitors plan their weekend.
Most activities remain open to the public without charge, although spaces on some ticketed tours may be limited.
