A Mississippi police officer who fatally shot a one-year-old boy in a Walmart car park has resigned, despite having been cleared of wrongdoing by the state Attorney General’s Office.
Senatobia Mayor Greg Graves confirmed that Sgt Hunter Foster had stepped down following the death of Kohen Wiley.
The shooting took place on June 14, when officers responded to a report of shoplifting at a local Walmart. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said officers saw “two subjects and a juvenile child fleeing from the store into a vehicle”.
Body-camera footage later showed Foster opening fire on the vehicle. Kohen was being held by his mother, Vellesiya Wiley, when he was shot and killed.
Ms Wiley denies shoplifting and disputes the police account that her friend drove the car towards officers.
No charges have been filed against anyone involved in the incident.
