Liverpool are preparing to meet Ifeanyi Ndukwe’s representatives this weekend as they consider recalling the teenage defender from his loan at Levante in January.
The 18-year-old Austrian centre-back moved to the Spanish club after work permit restrictions prevented Liverpool from including him in their competitive matchday plans. The situation has since changed following a run of appearances in Spain.
Liverpool weigh January recall for Ifeanyi Ndukwe
Ndukwe has made several appearances for Levante, including three successive starts, helping him earn the points required to qualify for a work permit in England.
Liverpool must now decide whether bringing him back to Anfield would offer the best route for his development and provide useful defensive cover during the second half of the season.
The teenager impressed during pre-season with his physical presence, defensive awareness and composure in possession. At 6ft 6in, he is viewed by the club as a player with significant potential and the possibility of becoming an important first-team figure.
The forthcoming discussions with his representatives are expected to help determine Ndukwe’s immediate future. Liverpool retain the option to recall him midway through the campaign, giving them flexibility as they assess their defensive needs.
A return to Merseyside could accelerate his progress if the coaching staff believe he is ready for senior football. However, continuing at Levante may be considered the more beneficial option if he remains guaranteed regular playing time.
Liverpool have already seen the value of the loan market, with Ronald Araujo making a significant impact after arriving temporarily. Ndukwe’s situation is different, but the club must decide whether his next step should come in Spain or at Anfield.
