Antonio Conte has played down speculation linking him with the Manchester United manager’s job, insisting that he is not in advanced negotiations with any club.
The Italian has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Michael Carrick at Old Trafford following reports that United could consider a change in the dugout. However, Conte says he is prepared to wait before deciding on his next move.
Antonio Conte responds to Manchester United links
In a statement posted on Instagram, Conte said: “My name has been linked with numerous clubs, but there are currently no negotiations at an advanced stage.
“Following a wonderful and successful spell in charge of Napoli, I will take the time I need to consider how and when to return to management. It will be a carefully considered decision, one I will make when I believe the conditions are right.
Conte also rejected reports that he had already made financial demands or requested complete control at clubs being linked with him. He said claims about reservations over his “strong personality” were also unfounded.
“Should a concrete opportunity arise, that will be the time to hold discussions with the club concerned and jointly consider the terms of a potential agreement, with due regard for both parties’ needs and the qualities and approach that define my work as a manager,” he added.
“Until then, any assumptions about my demands and my professional future remain speculation and cannot be treated as fact.”
Conte, who has previously managed Chelsea and Tottenham in the Premier League, won the title with Chelsea and has also claimed Serie A with Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli.
His experience has made him a popular choice among United supporters in a poll of the names linked with the vacancy. For now, though, Conte’s statement indicates that no deal to succeed Carrick is close.
