Chelsea are maintaining an interest in Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz after Xabi Alonso advised the club to remain alert to any change in the Germany international’s situation at Anfield.
The 23-year-old joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in a major move but has endured an uneven start on Merseyside. However, his recent performances have suggested that he is beginning to find his best form.
Chelsea keeping watch on Florian Wirtz
A report by TEAMtalk claims Chelsea are not actively pursuing Wirtz at present, with Liverpool having no intention of selling him and the player remaining committed to establishing himself at the club.
Instead, the London club are understood to be monitoring developments in case Liverpool’s stance changes. Alonso’s previous relationship with Wirtz at Leverkusen is believed to be a significant factor behind Chelsea’s interest.
Alonso has previously spoken highly of the midfielder, describing him as one of the best players in the world and saying: “Flo is one of the top players in the world – he’s world-class.”
Wirtz’s form has also begun to improve. He created nine chances from open play in Liverpool’s match against Brentford, the highest total recorded by a Premier League player away from home in more than 15 years, according to Liverpool’s official website.
He followed that display by scoring in Liverpool’s 4-3 Champions League victory over Villarreal, providing another indication that his confidence is returning.
Liverpool are determined to make the transfer work and would be unwise to allow outside interest to influence their thinking prematurely. The midfielder remains under contract until 2030, while his recent displays have offered evidence of the ability that made him one of Europe’s most sought-after players.
Chelsea’s interest is therefore likely to remain a watching brief for now. Any potential move would appear dependent on Liverpool becoming willing to sell and Wirtz deciding that he needs a fresh start.
