Manchester United are reportedly considering Eddie Howe as a potential replacement for Michael Carrick, with the former Newcastle United manager emerging as a preferred option amid the club’s difficult start to the season.
Howe is currently available after leaving Newcastle in the summer. His reputation and previous work with Dan Ashworth, who was later involved with United, have helped fuel speculation that he could now be brought to Old Trafford.
Manchester United’s interest in Eddie Howe
Howe had been considered by United before. However, during Ashworth’s time at the club, owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reported to have favoured Ruben Amorim instead.
The latest report suggests United could revisit Howe’s candidacy if the pressure on Carrick continues to grow. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his position, Carrick is still expected to oversee this weekend’s Premier League match against Bournemouth.
The 45-year-old is due to hold a press conference later today, with the Bournemouth fixture potentially carrying significant consequences for his future.
Another poor result could increase the likelihood of a managerial change, particularly with an experienced and available candidate such as Howe potentially on the market.
United may therefore have the opportunity to correct their previous decision and turn to Howe if they decide Carrick can no longer remain in charge.
