Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. has been charged with marijuana possession after a traffic stop in Carmel, Indiana, during which police allege he admitted smoking cannabis in his car.
The 24-year-old was stopped on October 12 while driving his Dodge Charger. Officers said they detected the smell of marijuana, and Richardson allegedly told them he had smoked in the vehicle to avoid doing so around his children.
Police removed Richardson from the car and handcuffed him while they searched it. They reported finding a small amount of marijuana and 500mg THC gummies, both of which were confiscated.
Richardson was not arrested. Officers removed the handcuffs and issued him with a summons for possession, while also citing him for an expired vehicle registration.
Prosecutors formally filed the marijuana possession charge earlier this week. A bench trial has been scheduled for January 4.
The Colts said they were aware of the matter involving Richardson, who is a backup quarterback for the team, and were gathering further information.
“We are aware of the situation involving Anthony Richardson and are currently gathering additional information. We will have no further comment at this time,” the team said.
