Two US Navy pilots were rescued from the water after being ejected from their aircraft during an unspecified mishap off the coast of Virginia.
The incident took place at about 6.18pm on Monday while the aviators, who were assigned to the carrier air wing aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, were operating from the aircraft carrier.
Both pilots were recovered quickly and returned to the ship, where they were being assessed by medical personnel, the US Navy said.
Four other shipboard personnel were injured. One sailor was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries described as non-life-threatening.
The incident occurred as the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower was undertaking its early carrier qualifications. The vessel had completed its latest repair period in July and was seen leaving Naval Station Norfolk earlier on Monday.
The cause of the mishap has not been disclosed, and the Navy has not said what type of aircraft was involved.
Carrier air wings operate two-seat F/A-18F aircraft and EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft.
