Neil Patrick Harris is to lead a Broadway revival of Damn Yankees in spring 2027, alongside Julianne Hough and Austin Scott.
The Tony Award-winning actor will play Applegate in the new production, with Hough taking the role of Lola and Scott appearing as Young Joe. The revival was announced at Yankee Stadium on Sunday, where the three stars appeared together.
Major League Baseball and its Emmy-winning MLB Studios are joining the production as partners.
Damn Yankees Broadway revival announced
The musical first opened on Broadway in 1955, with a book by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop and music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross.
This new version has been adapted by Will Power and Doug Wright, with additional lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. It will be the first Broadway revival of the show in more than 30 years.
Set in the early 2000s, the story follows Joe Boyd, a devoted baseball fan who longs to see the Baltimore Orioles return to glory. His fortunes and those of his team change when a mysterious stranger and an accomplice make him an offer that comes with a catch.
Sergio Trujillo will direct and choreograph the production.
Harris has appeared in a number of Broadway productions, including Proof, Cabaret, Assassins, Peter Pan Goes Wrong and Art. He made his Broadway debut in the 2024 production of Hedwig and the Angry Itch, winning the Tony Award for best actor in a musical that year.
The production will mark Hough’s second Broadway show and her first Broadway musical. She previously appeared in POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive in 2022.
Scott’s previous Broadway credits include Hamilton, Girl from the North Country and & Juliet.
Damn Yankees will be staged at the Marquis Theatre, with previews due to begin on 24 March 2027. Opening night is scheduled for 20 April.
