Nicolas Cage has said he will “probably” not work with Amazon again after objecting to the company’s approach to artificial intelligence.
The 62-year-old actor made the remarks during a panel at New York Comic Con on Saturday, October 10, following the cancellation of his Prime Video series Spider-Noir after one season.
Cage said Amazon’s investment in AI was incompatible with his position as an actor. “Amazon is a very AI-friendly company, to the tune of $50 billion invested in OpenAI,” he said. “I am not an AI-friendly actor, so it’s like, connect those dots! I’m not a member of their club.”
He added: “I didn’t sign the waiver to let him use AI on Spider-Noir. I’m probably not going to be working with that studio again, but that’s okay.”
Spider-Noir, which debuted on Prime Video earlier this year, won five Emmy awards before being cancelled by the streamer after its first season.
Cage said he was instead keen to work with younger filmmakers, including Gen Z directors such as Backrooms creator Kane Parsons.
“I got to get with these young directors who are Gen Z, and they’re going at it their own way, whether it’s through the YouTube culture or whatever it is,” he said. “They’re doing it from scratch and by hand. I want to get with that.”
The actor also said he was interested in taking on more television work, revealing that he will star in the next season of True Detective.
