A power bank caught fire mid-flight on an IndiGo Airlines service from Delhi to Chennai, forcing the aircraft to divert to Hyderabad for an emergency landing.
Flames broke out inside an overhead luggage compartment while the device was stored in a passenger’s carry-on bag. Video from the cabin showed bright flames spreading through the storage bin as passengers stood in the aisle and attempted to contain the fire.
Thick black smoke was reported to have filled the cabin during the incident on flight 6E 6115. The crew brought the flames under control before the aircraft landed safely at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad.
IndiGo said smoke had been detected coming from a passenger’s electronic device and that its crew acted quickly while following safety protocols.
No injuries were reported. Passengers were required to change aircraft before continuing their journey to Chennai.
The airline apologised for the disruption and provided refreshments to passengers after the emergency landing.
