Chelsea are reportedly considering a January move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong as they search for a replacement for Enzo Fernandez.
The 29-year-old Netherlands international has emerged as a potential target, although a deal would be difficult to complete with Barcelona understood to value him at no less than £50 million.
Chelsea transfer interest in Frenkie de Jong
Football Insider reports that Chelsea have identified De Jong as an option ahead of the January transfer window. The midfielder’s ability to control possession and remain composed under pressure is believed to have attracted the London club’s attention.
De Jong is currently recovering from an injury but is reportedly nearing a return to action. His expected availability could make negotiations more complicated, with Barcelona keen to have an established midfielder back in their team as they pursue silverware this season.
The Dutchman is also contracted to the Spanish club until 2029, strengthening Barcelona’s position in any potential discussions over his future.
Chelsea have been assessing alternatives after their reported £47 million agreement to sign Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara fell through when the French side withdrew from the deal on deadline day.
That setback has prompted the Blues to examine other midfield options, with De Jong now among the players under consideration. It remains unclear whether Chelsea will make a formal approach in January, but Barcelona’s reluctance to lose the player is likely to make any negotiations challenging.
