Police in North Carolina stopped two men after they were spotted travelling along a city street on a couch balanced across two electric scooters.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said officers saw the unusual vehicle on S. Tryon Street last week and intervened.
“It was certainly a first when our officers stopped two gentlemen traveling down S. Tryon Street on a couch… Yes, an actual couch,” the department said in a social media post.
A photograph shared by police appeared to show the men using the furniture as a platform while riding the scooters along the road.
Although officers acknowledged the creativity involved, they warned that the stunt could distract motorists and create a risk to road safety.
“While we appreciate the creativity, we do have to remind everyone: no matter what you’re ‘driving’ (using that term extremely loosely), please think about safety first,” police said.
The department asked people considering similarly unconventional transport to consider whether it belonged on a road alongside ordinary traffic, and whether the sight could cause other drivers to lose focus.
“If the answer feels even slightly like ‘yes,’ maybe rethink the ride,” officers added.
It was not clear whether either man received a citation. Police ended their warning with a joke: “As a rule — probably best to leave the mobile furniture displays to IKEA.”
