A newly graduated Queensland police officer has been taken to hospital after allegedly being stabbed in the neck and torso during a callout in Hemmant, east of Brisbane.
Police were sent to a home in Bogong Street at about 5.15am on Sunday following reports of a disturbance involving a father and son.
After officers spoke with the two men, one allegedly attacked them. A second officer was reportedly slashed across the forehead, according to the Queensland Police Union.
The alleged attacker fled on a bicycle before abandoning it and continuing on foot. He was located and taken into custody at about 7am.
Queensland Police Union president Shane Prior said the injured officer pursued the man and used his Taser while holding his neck to control the bleeding.
“In my books, he’s an absolute hero,” Mr Prior said.
The officer, a man in his 40s, is in a stable condition. He graduated from the police academy in July and had been in the job for about 10 weeks, having previously worked for the Australian Red Cross.
Mr Prior said the object used in the attack was not believed to be a knife but an “implement”. The area remained cordoned off as police continued their investigation.
“We may very well have been talking about a scenario where an officer was killed today just doing their job,” Mr Prior said.
