The cast of Sabrina the Teenage Witch have reunited in Chicago ahead of the sitcom’s 30th anniversary, prompting a look at what happened to the stars of the much-loved 1996 series.
The programme ran for seven years and followed Sabrina Spellman, played by Melissa Joan Hart, after she discovered on her 16th birthday that she was a witch.
Hart, now 50, said the show had endured because of its international following. “It’s still so loved. It’s so international,” she said, adding that viewers had told her it helped them through difficult periods or helped them learn English.
Melissa Joan Hart and Caroline Rhea
Hart had already found success in Clarissa Explains It All before taking the lead in Sabrina the Teenage Witch. During the sitcom’s run, she appeared in films including Can’t Hardly Wait and Drive Me Crazy, made guest appearances on television and directed several episodes.
After the show ended in 2003, she married musician Mark Wilkerson and had three sons, Mason, Brady and Tucker. She continued acting, notably in Melissa & Joey and television films including My Fake Fiancé and Holiday in Handcuffs.
Hart also published a memoir in 2013 about growing up in the spotlight. She has continued to act, produce and direct, and most recently appeared in the Lifetime film Killing the Competition.
Caroline Rhea, 62, played Sabrina’s mischievous aunt Hilda Spellman. Alongside her work on the sitcom, she appeared regularly on Hollywood Squares and The Rosie O’Donnell Show.
Rhea later hosted The Caroline Rhea Show and a season of The Biggest Loser, as well as performing stand-up comedy. She also voiced the mother on Phineas and Ferb and continues to perform worldwide.
Beth Broderick and Salem the cat
Beth Broderick, 67, played Zelda Spellman, Sabrina’s more serious and scholarly aunt. Since the series finished, she has appeared in Lost, Under the Dome, Castle, Cold Case, CSI, ER and Supernatural.
She also took on stage roles and co-wrote A Cup of Joe, Wonderland and Literatti with Dennis Bailey. Broderick is a founding member of Momentum, a New York organisation which assists people with Aids.
She previously described Hart and Rhea as family, saying Hart was “a hard-working super smart woman” and “a treasure”.
Salem Saberhagen, the Spellman family’s sarcastic cat, was voiced by Nick Bakay. In the story, Salem was a 500-year-old witch condemned to spend a century in feline form after attempting to take over the world.
Bakay, 66, also voiced Norbert in The Angry Beavers. He went on to work as a screenwriter, co-writing Paul Blart: Mall Cop, its sequel and Zookeeper, and became an executive producer on the CBS series Mom.
Harvey, Libby and the school cast
Nate Richert played Sabrina’s clean-cut boyfriend Harvey Kinkle. His final acting role was in 2020, and he previously said he had taken maintenance and janitorial work to pay his bills.
In 2018, Richert wrote: “I’m currently a maintenance man, a janitor, a carpenter, and do whatever random jobs I can get to pay the bills.”
Jenna Leigh Green, 52, played Libby Chessler, the spiteful school mean girl who frequently clashed with Sabrina. Away from the sitcom, Green played Nessarose, Elphaba’s sister, in Wicked on Broadway and on the show’s first national tour.
She has also appeared in episodes of Bones, Castle, Cold Case, ER and Dharma & Greg. Green has said there was no animosity between her and Hart despite their characters’ rivalry.
Lindsay Sloane, 49, appeared as Sabrina’s friend Valerie Birkhead for two seasons before leaving the show. She later took roles in a range of films and television programmes and starred in the CBS remake of The Odd Couple.
Martin Mull played Sabrina’s high school principal, Willard Kraft, from 1997 to 2000. The role formed only a small part of a career which also included Roseanne and Clue.
Mull later appeared in The Ellen Show, Danny Phantom, ’Til Death, Dads, Two and a Half Men and Veep. He died in June 2024 at the age of 80 following a long illness.
The later additions to Sabrina the Teenage Witch
Soleil Moon Frye joined the cast in 2000 as Roxie, one of Sabrina’s college friends. The actress, who was also known for Punky Brewster, later had four children with television producer Jason Goldberg.
Frye has provided voices for The Proud Family, Planet Sheen and Robot Chicken, briefly hosted Home Made Simple and released books about parenting and party planning.
Elisa Donovan, 55, played Morgan, Sabrina’s other college flatmate. Donovan had previously appeared as Amber, Cher’s frenemy, in Clueless.
Since Sabrina ended, she has built a television-film career and appeared as a guest on Melissa & Joey. She and her husband have one daughter, Scarlett Avery Bigelow, born in 2012.
David Lascher, 54, played Josh, the coffee-house manager and photographer whose arrival helped bring about the breakup of Sabrina and Harvey. Sabrina and Josh eventually became a couple, although they split at the end of the series.
Lascher later appeared in Melissa & Joey and had starred in Blossom with Joey Lawrence. He directed the film Sister in 2014 and has three children with his wife.
Alimi Ballard, 48, played Quizmaster Albert before going on to appear as FBI agent David Sinclair in Numb3rs. His later credits included Queen Sugar, Lucifer, Criminal Minds, The Catch and Queen of the South.
In 2025, Ballard moved into directing with the Lifetime film Be Happy, marking another chapter in the varied careers of the stars who helped make Sabrina the Teenage Witch a lasting television favourite.
