Sandra Bullock has described the collapse of her marriage to Jesse James as “a really dark time” in a rare reflection on the cheating scandal that ended their relationship in 2010.
The Oscar-winning actress said filming Gravity three years later mirrored the turmoil in her personal life, as she raised her newly adopted son Louis while trying to recover from the breakdown of her marriage.
Speaking to Jennifer Aniston for Interview magazine, Bullock said the science-fiction drama was the film that had carried the greatest personal meaning for her.
“It was during a really dark time in my life,” she said. “I was raising and protecting a little smurf while I was trying to grieve, trying to get out of it.”
Bullock spent much of the production alone inside a specially designed rig and LED light box, often working for up to nine hours without a scene partner. She said the isolation left her with considerable time to think.
“Being locked in a box by myself with no one to talk to for nine hours a day, you do a lot of thinking,” she told Aniston.
At the time, Bullock was also determined to keep Louis, who had arrived at the end of 2009, away from the intense press attention surrounding the scandal. She recalled using a hockey bag to conceal his car seat while leaving the family home as paparazzi gathered outside.
Bullock said she had realised she needed to get away because “no one knew I had a newborn”. She described the precautions required to protect her family as operating “like the CIA”.
News of James’s infidelity emerged in March 2010, shortly after Bullock’s success during awards season for The Blind Side. James, the founder of West Coast Choppers, later entered rehabilitation in Arizona for sex addiction and apologised publicly, but the marriage could not be saved.
Bullock and James, who married in 2005, divorced later that year after reports of his relationship with tattoo model Michelle “Bombshell” McGee.
The actress told Aniston that the experience had shaped her fierce approach to privacy, warning that information about a celebrity’s personal life can become a source of income for people around them.
Louis is now 16, while Bullock also has a 12-year-old daughter, Laila, whom she adopted in 2015. She was later in a long-term relationship with photographer Bryan Randall, who died from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in 2023.
