Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly considering a January move for Freiburg striker Igor Matanovic after his explosive start to the season in the Bundesliga.
The Croatia international has scored six goals and provided two assists in six appearances, prompting claims that Spurs could pursue him when the transfer window reopens. His potential fee is reported to be between €35 million and €40 million.
Tottenham made a significant investment in their squad during the summer, but Roberto De Zerbi’s side remain without a Premier League victory after four matches. The early results have increased scrutiny on a team that underwent extensive change during the close season.
Tottenham assess January striker options
Matanovic’s form has emerged as a possible solution to Tottenham’s problems in attack. Dom Solanke remains De Zerbi’s principal number nine, although his time at the club has been affected by injuries and inconsistent performances.
De Zerbi has several attacking options at his disposal, but the current group have yet to deliver the results expected following the club’s heavy spending. A move for Matanovic would represent another sizeable outlay, particularly if the Freiburg forward maintains his scoring rate.
There is also uncertainty over whether De Zerbi will still be in charge by January if Tottenham’s form fails to improve. For now, however, reports suggest the club are already examining the market for a striker, with Matanovic among the names being considered.
