Taylor Swift has premiered the music video for her new single “Patient Zero”, unveiling the project at the 2026 MTV VMAs in a visual starring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell.
The release came shortly after Swift arrived at the ceremony on Sunday September 27, where she accepted the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors for her work as a music video director and visual storyteller.

Johnson plays Farrell’s new girlfriend, while Swift appears as his former lover. Cara Delevingne also features as another woman connected to Farrell’s character.
After the premiere, Swift thanked Delevingne for taking on what she jokingly called the “lusty other woman”. The video’s storyline reflects the song’s central idea: women comparing notes after discovering they have had similar experiences with the same man.
Swift said the production allowed her to draw on several genres, including gothic ghost stories, true crime and psychological thrillers. She also gave the house at the centre of the video a symbolic role, describing it as representing “the coldness of a relationship that’s faded and atrophied”.
She credited production designer Ethan Tobman with helping to realise that idea and praised longtime editor Chancler Haynes for his contribution to the finished video.
Swift praises “Patient Zero” collaborators
Swift described working with Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki as “something out of a dream sequence”, adding that she learned by watching him work.
She also thanked Johnson and Farrell for trusting her with the project. Swift said she and Johnson spent much of the shoot “twinning” and giggling together, while praising Farrell’s performance as a villain.
Swift said Farrell was “an absolute light and as kind as they come” away from the role, making his portrayal of the character particularly impressive.
“Patient Zero” was released on September 25 as one of four new tracks on The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore. The expanded album also includes “Cleveland!”, “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon”.
Swift said she reunited with longtime collaborators Max Martin and Shellback in Sweden to create the additional music after the success of The Life of a Showgirl.
She ended her message by thanking the VMAs for giving “Patient Zero” its world premiere “at the place where celebrating music videos became a thing”.
