Taylor Swift debuted the star-studded music video for “Patient Zero” at the 2026 MTV VMAs, directing the film herself and appearing alongside Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson.
Swift plays “Patient Zero” in the video, while Farrell and Johnson portray lovers. Swift’s character is presented as Farrell’s former partner.
The singer directed the production, with three-time Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki behind the camera.
“Patient Zero” features on The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, the expanded edition of Swift’s album released on Friday.
The premiere followed Swift’s acceptance of MTV’s inaugural Artist Director Honor. Johnson presented the award, which recognised Swift’s work behind the camera across nearly two decades of music videos.
Swift told the audience that she had appeared in roughly 60 music videos and had written and directed 18 of them. She said the main reason she enjoyed directing was the fans.
“It’s so rewarding, because you actually care about what we’re making,” she said, before thanking those who had worked with her on the projects.
Swift, who attended the VMAs for the first time as a married woman, concluded her speech by screening “Patient Zero” for the audience at the Peacock Theater.
